XIS Music News

07 February 2018

It has been a busy start to the New Year for the XIS Music Department. From the 20th to the 21st January, XIS hosted the first ever Musical Futures workshop in China. This workshop brought together 25 music teachers from around Asia to explore informal learning. From the 31st of January to the 4th of February, two senior students accompanied by Ms Joseph traveled to Suzhou to participate in the 10th International School Choral Music Festival. The students, Yena Su and Krisna Wilson, described the experience as magical with the highlight including the opportunity to perform at the world famous Suzhou Cultural Theatre in front of 1000 people. On the 5th of February, Grade 10 had the pleasure to welcome the owner of Xiamen’s SLYS Music School into class to learn about Rock Improvisation.

XIS Secondary Academic Day

The Secondary House Academic Day took place recently, this event is part of the four house days that the XIS House system puts on every year. This year’s version of Academic Day saw a small change in the format from the previous years, and was designed to challenge students in making connections between subject areas. The days long activities were broken into 4 unique events, there was a Natural Disaster Challenge, Science of Sport Activity, Big-time Art Challenge and an Instrument Construction Lab. Students had the opportunity to preselect the event that they would spend the day exploring in vertically aligned groups. As part of the preparation for the events, students took part in a whole secondary 80 minute long knowledge/trivia bowl which was won by the Yellow House. The overall winner for the day however, ended up being the Red House Roosters. They join the Yellow House Tigers, winners of the Athletics Day earlier this year on the top of the scorecard. The next event in the House calendar will be Creativity day and that will take place after the December Holiday Break.
